New City Microcreamery cake batter ice cream

September’s arrival brought the realization that I had gone the whole summer without doing an ice cream Snack, and I decided I had to change that before the season ended officially. I went to a favorite in Central Square called New City Microcreamery, where the “tap list” of choices is long (think baklava, horchata and cannoli) and the ice cream is absolutely delicious. Cake Batter – sweet cream ice cream mixed with birthday cake batter and rainbow sprinkles – had a strong flavor and well-mixed mix-ins (important!). All the ice cream at New City is made with liquid nitrogen, which, through aeration, results supposedly in a lighter texture. I’m not sure the texture was actually that different from what’s at other premium shops, but it definitely had a smooth and rich feel. New City’s only downside is that its prices can get a bit steep, but frankly, it’s worth it.
